An estimated one billion children live in poverty around the world. They face extraordinary hardship resulting from difficult, often desperate living situations or exclusion. “Children in crisis” are boys and girls affected by sexual exploitation, hazardous labour, war, street life, violence, disability, or lack of a primary caregiver. Children are more vulnerable than adults to the impact of crisis situations. They have less capacity for self-protection and survival because of an underdeveloped mental and emotional capacity at their tender age. Children in crisis need help and nurturing to recover from past trauma and grow up fulfilling their potential.
